Yom Hazikaron

Tomorrow, the 5th of Iyar, is Yom Hazikaron ( יום הזיכרון‎, Day of Remembrance).

The full title of the day is Yom Hazikaron l’Chalalei Ma’arachot Yisrael v’l’Nifgaei Peulot Ha’eivah: יום הזיכרון לחללי מערכות ישראל ולנפגעי פעולות האיבה‎,  translated as the “Day of Remembrance for the Fallen Soldiers of Isael and Victims of Acts of Hostility”.

Within Israel, Yom Hazikaron is marked by sirens and silence. The first siren will sound tonight, all throughout the country of Israel, at 8:00 p.m. and will last for one minute in which all activity is to be stopped (including traffic) and all citizens are to stand in silence.

The Israeli flag will be lowered to half staff.

The second siren continues for two full minutes and is sounded the following day at 11:00 a.m., signaling the start of memorial and commemoration services.
