L’Shana Tova 5774!
Today is Erev Rosh HaShanah, meaning that the Jewish New Year begins at sundown tonight. Translated as “head of the year”, Rosh HaShaman marks the start of the Days of Awe (Yamin Noraim), a ten day period of reflecting, repenting, and praying.
It is customary to celebrate the New Year with acts of generosity, a festive meal with a round challah (crown challah) and a whole fish (symbolism contained because the head is attached: head of new year, the goal of being head instead of tales, etc.), sounding the shofar and by eating apples and honey to ensure a sweet year.
