Shabbat Shalom, 5 Kislev 5774

Jacob’s Dream, 1691, Michael Willmann

Candle lighting times for South Whidbey: Shabbat at 4:23, havdalah at 5:30.

This week’s parsha is vayetz (Genesis 28:10-32:3), translated as “and he left”. A simplistic version of this parshat would state that Jacob set out from his home, had a dream about a ladder and met Rachel at a well. Smitten by her, Jacob entered into a deal with Laban offering his labor for her hand in marriage. Things dis not go smoothly, and in a bride switcheroo Jacob found himself waking up to find Leah, not Rachel in his bed. Interestingly, there are no commandments introduced in this parsha.
