Today is Tzom Gedaliah (4 Tishrei)

Tzom Gedaliah (Fast of Gedaliah ) is a minor Jewish holiday, a dawn to dusk fast from food and beverage that serves as a lamentation response to the assassination of Gedaliah.

Gedaliah was a righteous governor of the Yehud province of Judah; he zealously pushed the concept of gaining security through food sovereignty by encouraging  the cultivation of fields, orchards, and vineyards. Appointed by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, Gedaliah’s death ended Jewish autonomy after the First Temple’s destruction.
